What is it?

The governing board and board of trustees are the strategic decision-making bodies in each school and multi-academy trust. They have a crucial role in making sure every child gets the best possible education.

Governors and trustees:

  • set the school or multi-academy trust’s strategic direction
  • hold the head teacher to account for a school or or multi-academy trust’s performance
  • ensure that the school or multi-academy trust’s budget is properly managed

School governors and boards of trustees must hold at least 3 meetings of the full governing body each school year. Many use sub-committees to look at more detailed aspects of their work and advise them on decisions. Committees often look at issues like pupil performance, the curriculum, staffing, finance and premises.

How can I get involved?

Governing bodies and boards of trustees need committed and enthusiastic people with relevant skills. Training can be provided and there are many sources of advice and support available.

You do not need to be a parent or carer to volunteer, governors and trustees come from all walks of life. They give back a great deal to their community while learning new skills and experiences that can support them in their own career.

Governors and trustees are volunteers but can receive ‘out of pocket’ expenses.

How can I get involved?
