Highways England removes roadworks for August bank holiday getaway
More than 400 miles of roadworks are being removed from motorways and major roads across the country this weekend to help bank holiday trips go smoothly.
Highways England always removes as many roadworks as possible at busy times, and will complete or lift 177 sets of roadworks for the late August getaway.
Simon Sheldon-Wilson, director of customer operations at Highways England, explained:
To help road users enjoy this bank holiday weekend, we’re completing or suspending over 400 miles of roadworks on motorways and major trunk roads. But we’re still asking people to play their part by planning their journeys and making use of the traffic information services we provide.
Roadworks will be removed wherever possible by 6am on Friday 28 August – leaving 97.4% of Highways England’s 9,534 mile network roadwork-free. View a map showing the locations of lifted and completed schemes.
In all, 432 miles of roadworks will be removed. Highways England is completing 115 schemes and suspending a further 62 sets of roadworks.
For the safety of drivers and their passengers, lane restrictions or temporary speed limits will need to remain at 52 locations. View a map showing the location of remaining schemes.
To give drivers as much information as possible to plan their trips, Highways England is also flagging potential holiday routes which could get busy over the bank holiday weekend. View a list of potential hotspots.

Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for the August bank holiday: Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) works will be ongoing to reinstate barrier taken down during the works. Due to the amount of varioguard and length of the works it would be both too time consuming and costly to remove these works and restore the road layout as well as potentially unsafe due to the VRS works.

A172 northbound entry slip to A19 is closed - 1.2 miles of roadworks - nil to slight delays. Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for the August bank holiday: To remove the narrower lanes and speed limit would require existing scaffolding to be removed and would require lane closures for five nights in each direction to undertake the work. This would have to repeated in reverse to reinstate the scaffolding and narrower lanes. The delays to road users during these operations would far outweigh the negligible effect on traffic by leaving the traffic management in place. Removing the traffic management would increase risks to road workers.

M6 junction 33 - 35 (near Lancaster) construction of Heysham Link. Lane 1 closure - 5miles of roadworks - nil to slight delays. Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for the August bank holiday: As part of the scheme to construct the new Heysham to M6 Link Road, works will be carried out on or adjacent to the existing M6 motorway. This will involve the reconstruction of junction 34 (Lancaster) of the M6 to provide entry and exit slip roads to both the north and southbound carriageways which have been improved to meet current standards. The existing Foundry Lane bridge will also be partly demolished and extended to accommodate the new northbound entry slip. In order to carry out these improvements it will be necessary to close the existing hard shoulders on both carriageways in the area of junction 34 throughout 2014 and 2015. Traffic management is to form a dedicated exit slip road for junction 34, exit slip. Lane 1 will be closed after the junction. Existing traffic management , which is a dedicated exit slip road for junction 34 exit slip and a lane 1 closure after the junction will be left on. The reason for keeping the traffic management on is that the lane 1 has varioguard installed and all road marking have been changed to suit new layout. Large amounts of verges are being removed. Piling machines are on site which would not be able to be removed.

A13 between Wennington and A1082 (near Aveley, Thurrock). The first phase of works to widen the A13 started on 27 February. Initial work involves site clearance, drainage and earthworks. There are narrow lanes in place along the A13 between Wennington and A1082 using a temporary barrier system with a 40mph speed limit in place to protect road users and the workforce (the speed limit is normally 50mph). We have maintained capacity with the same number of lanes available as when there is no traffic management - 8 miles of roadworks - nil to slight delays. Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for the August bank holiday: There are narrow lanes in place, keeping the same number of lanes running, overnight closures are lifted through the bank holiday, but it would not be safe or practical to remove the varioguard, narrow lanes or speed limit. It would take at least four nights to remove the traffic management and another four to set it out again, the cost and time implications and increased risk to roadworkers removing and setting out traffic management are too great for very little change for road users. There would also be safety implications for road users as safety barrier has been removed behind the varioguard barriers as part of site clearance work.
A21 Pembury to Tonbridge (near Tonbridge) carriageway widening, junction improvements. A 40mph speed limit and metal safety barrier has been put in place throughout the works area to protect the road user and workforce. Two way traffic remains in place. On agreed dates, we will undertake overnight full carriageway closures and lane closures under temporary traffic lights - these will be agreed prior to implementation and avoid the bank holiday itself - 3 miles of roadworks - nil to slight delays. Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for the August bank holiday: Safety of the workforce and travelling public.
A27 Shoreham Air Show Incident. Due to the tragic incident at the Shoreham air show last weekend, we are currently unable to estimate a time for the reopening of the A27. This is for ongoing investigation and repair work.
