Statistics at MMO
We publish both Official Statistics and Management Information on marine activities in England and the UK.
The MMO, on behalf of the UK Fisheries Authorities identified some data quality concerns, specifically related to the Catch Recording data included, or used to produce data, in the below releases. For further information, please see the following notice.
The Marine Management Organisation follows all Defra statistical policies.
Official Statistics
The MMO produces four regular official statistics releases:
- Annual UK Sea Fisheries Statistics
- Monthly Provisional UK Sea Fisheries Statistics
- Bluefin Tuna Catch and Release Recreational Fishery (CRRF) Statistics
As well as regular releases, the MMO also produces ad-hoc official statistics releases:
Official statistics are statistics produced by Crown bodies and other organisations listed within an Official Statistics Order, on behalf of the UK government or devolved administrations. They provide a factual basis for assessment and decisions on economic, social and environmental issues at all levels of society. This broad definition of official statistics means that the scope of official statistics can be adapted over time to suit changing circumstances.
All official statistics are preannounced as provisional in line with the code of practice for statistics up to 12 months in advance of release with dates confirmed 4 weeks before scheduled release. For details of MMO’s upcoming releases please see the release calendar here
Management Information
The MMO produces four regular management information releases:
Management information are essential operational data in a relative raw form. They provide transparency about an organisation’s business or operation when they are published.
Management information can be released on a regular or ad hoc basis to respond to the business need for transparency. This means the quality can be lower than the quality of official statistics.
Data Collection Framework
The Data Collection Framework is a legislative framework that is used to standardise collection of a range of fisheries data, for the purpose of informing international scientific advice in the management of the fishery resource.
See information on the UK’s implementation of the Data Collection Framework.
