Jonathan Athow
Biography
Jonathan re-joined HM Revenue and Customs at the beginning of October 2021 having previously worked as the Deputy National Statistician and Director General for Economic Statistics at the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Jonathan joined the ONS in June 2015, leading the production and transformation of economic statistics. Before joining the ONS, Jonathan worked at HM Treasury for 14 years on a range of economic and policy issues, including changes to the tax and benefits system, NHS and social care, and the fiscal and macroeconomic policy framework. Jonathan was also Departmental Chief Economist at HMRC.
Director General Customer Strategy and Tax Design
The Director General Customer Strategy and Tax Design has overall responsibility for a group of teams that use customer insight to design better tax strategy, assurance, policies, products and processes that:
- meet customer needs
- make it easier for them to get things right
- reduce the risk of honest mistakes and opportunities to dodge tax
The Director General will also advise ministers on UK tax policy, and work internationally to improve the global tax framework, while producing the strategy for all of HMRC’s core functions, not just its tax operation.
