Turkey and Syria earthquakes: UK government response
How the UK government is responding to the earthquakes which struck Turkey and north-west Syria on 6 February 2023.
On 6 February a major earthquake hit south-east Turkey, affecting 10 cities including Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Gaziantep and Adiyaman, and the north-west region of Syria. Later that day a second major earthquake occurred in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş, 80 miles north of Gaziantep.
The UK government responded immediately to the Turkish government’s requests for humanitarian support, and continues to increase its support to the international response. We are working with the United Nations (UN) and other partner organisations to respond to the emergency in Syria.
We continue to deliver humanitarian support, given the magnitude of the damage these earthquakes caused and the difficult winter conditions.
If you would like to help, donate to DEC Turkey-Syria earthquake appeal to support British aid organisations. The appeal has reached over £100 million.
Money can be transferred quickly to areas where it is needed, and used to buy what is most needed. The government matched the first £5 million of public donations to the DEC appeal. You can also find other ways to help.
