In 2001 he was appointed HM Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina (2001-2005), HM Ambassador to the Sudan (2005-2007), and Ambassador and Head of UK Delegation to the OSCE in Vienna (2007-2011).
A historian by education, Ian has always been interested in the rich history of the South-East Europe. He is now looking forward to seizing all the opportunities to further develop UK’s relationship with Croatia on a number of important issues both bilaterally, as well as multilaterally within the EU and NATO.
Ian attended Hampton Grammar School and Magdalen College, Oxford (MA Modern History). He is married to Mrs Caroline Cliff and has three children. He is a keen historian, railway enthusiast and stamp collector and enjoys music and art.
