Cameron Z-275 balloon, G-TCAS

Summary:

The pilot had identified a suitable landing area in a large field and made a normal approach to his intended touch down point. The surface wind was 6 to 10 mph and in order to minimise the dragging of the passenger basket across the field, the pilot used the red deflation line to rapidly deflate the envelope. On touchdown the pilot was ejected from the basket, which passed over him causing serious injuries. The pilot restraint line which secures the pilot in the basket had not been connected to the pilot’s safety harness.
