Summary:

The aircraft was returning to Higher Barn Farm strip, east of Preston when the engine rpm began hunting from low to moderate power. After several cycles the engine stopped and the pilot attempted to carry out an emergency landing in a grass field. The air speed decayed and the aircraft probably stalled undershooting the intended landing area and entered a substantial hedge. Both the pilot and passenger received serious injuries. It was highly probable that fuel starvation was the cause of the engine stopping.
