Biometric residence permits (BRPs)
If your BRP is expiring
What you need to do when your biometric residence permit (BRP) expires depends on why it’s expiring.
If your permission to stay in the UK (for example, your visa) is expiring
You must apply to extend your stay or get a new type of permission. For example, you can extend your visa or apply for a new visa.
If your BRP is expiring
BRPs are being replaced by eVisas. An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status.
If you have permission to stay in the UK after your BRP expires, you’ll need to set up access to your eVisa. It will not be automatically set up.
You can keep using your BRP until it expires.
You do not need to tell UKVI when your BRP has expired.
What to do with an expired BRP
You should keep your expired BRP.
You may be able to use it as evidence if you apply to stay in the UK.
You may be able to use your expired BRP to travel to the UK until 31 March 2025 if both:
- your BRP expires on or after 31 December 2024
- you still have permission to stay in the UK
