Check coastal erosion risk for an area in England
Find out the risk of coastal erosion for an area in England.
There’s a different way to find out about coastal erosion risk and management in Scotland, in Wales and in Northern Ireland.
Before you start
You can search the map for an area in England. It shows the estimated land at risk from coastal erosion for 3 time periods:
- short term - until 2030
- medium term - until 2060
- long term - until 2110
The estimates on the map have different percentages of ‘confidence’. These suggest how statistically likely it is the coast will retreat by that many metres.
The map shows the risk of coastal erosion in the following 2 ways:
- if there was no future work to maintain or build coastal defences
- if the current plans to manage the coastline - known as ‘Shoreline Management Plans’ - are followed
Each Shoreline Management Plan includes one of the following 4 different ways of managing coastal erosion:
- no active intervention - maintaining or supporting a more natural coastline
- hold the line - protection against flooding and erosion is maintained or upgraded to keep the shoreline in broadly the same place
- managed realignment - the position of the shoreline is changed in a controlled way, for example by slowing erosion or creating areas of habitat to help manage flooding
- advance the line - new defences are built to extend the land area out to sea
