The climate information prize (CIP) evaluation: helping Kenyans to adapt to climate change
CIP was run under the 'Ideas to Impact' programme, which tested the value of using innovation prizes to achieve international development outcomes
Abstract
The Climate Information Prize (CIP) was a competition that ran in Kenya between 2015 and 2018. It aimed to encourage local innovators to develop climate information services that could be accessed and used by farmers, so they could reduce their vulnerability to climate change.
The CIP was run under the UK Department for International Development funded ‘Ideas to Impact’ programme, This was established to test the value of using innovation prizes to achieve international development outcomes, often to encourage people to act differently over months or years.
The brief provides an overview of what happened when ‘Ideas to Impact’ ran the CIP and the key findings from its evaluation. The full evaluation report provides the detail.
Nine months from the award of the Climate Information Prize in Kenya, the evaluation was followed with a brief follow-up assessment, published January 2020, to understand if the Prize initiatives and effects were sustained. The assessment found that most are still being implemented with climate information being delivered to an increased number of potential users.
The CIP was delivered by IMC Worldwide with Cardno as the local implementing agent and was designed by the Institute of Development Studies.
