Competition and data protection in digital markets: a joint statement between the CMA and the ICO 2021 (CMA, ICO)

A statement from the CMA and the ICO

Abstract

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) have published a joint statement that sets out their shared views on the relationship between competition and data protection in the digital economy. The statement sets out:

  • the important role that data – including personal data – plays within the digital economy
  • the strong synergies that exist between the aims of competition and data protection
  • the ways that the 2 regulators will work collaboratively together to overcome any perceived tensions between their objectives
  • practical examples of how the 2 organisations are already working together to deliver positive outcomes for consumers
