A senior marine engine operator licence (SMEOL) provides evidence of the qualifications seafarers need to operate marine engines on UK-registered vessels of less than 750 kW without area controls.

How much it costs 

£215, which includes the cost of the oral exam. 

What you’ll need to apply 

You’ll need to: 

  • have 6 months seagoing service while holding a marine engine operator licence (MEOL) on vessels of at least 200 kW

  • pass the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) oral examination to become a SMEOL

How long it lasts 

Your SMEOL does not need to be renewed.
