Details

Sea levels are predicted to rise and an increase in extreme weather events is predicted to make the task of maintaining adequate defences against coastal flooding and erosion even harder. Beaches will continue to play an important role as barriers to flooding and erosion. Their maintenance and improvement will take a substantial proportion of the expenditure on coastal defences.

Outcome

This scoping study provides evidence of the need to revise and expand the Beach Management Manual, originally published by the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA) in 1996. The new edition will aim to reach a wider audience, including those involved in the routine maintenance and monitoring of beaches. This includes those carrying out major beach improvement schemes of managing coastal defences.

This study proposes that the new manual should include:

  • the latest information on beach monitoring and maintenance
  • an evaluation of the state and performance of beaches
  • guidance on the design, procurement, execution and aftercare of beach improvement schemes

This study proposes that the new manual be produced as an e-publication using a modular format. The host website could act as a portal for further information when it becomes available.

This project ran during 2006.
