Background
The effects of poor working practices on the coastal and marine environment can be significant. This is based on how sensitive the habitats often are, and how important coastal areas are for people’s activities and interests.
People working on sites in and around the coast are often responsible for preventing these effects or minimising the risks. It’s important that trained and experienced people who can manage environmental issues with speed and urgency are on hand to maintain high standards of environmental awareness and education. To help them, the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA) led a collaborative project to produce this coastal and marine environmental site guide.
Approach
The guide, which applies to all levels of construction experience, gives practical and accessible information on understanding, avoiding and mitigating the effects of poor environmental practice in the coastal and marine environment.
The guide primarily focuses on once a project has reached the construction stage. As such, it’s mainly aimed at:
- site managers
- foremen and site supervisors
- site engineers
- contract supervisors / resident engineers
- project managers
It’ll also be of interest to a wider audience, such as:
- contractors
- designers
- planning supervisors
- environmental regulators
The project started in 2001 and was completed in 2003.
