Objectives

This project addresses the issues of safety with regards to overtopping of urban sea walls within the wider remit of the EC-funded CLASH (Crest Level Assessment of Coastal Structures) project. It aims to develop new methods for engineers and managers to analyse or design defences against wave-induced flooding and overtopping hazards. It uses full scale monitoring, neural network prediction and hazard analysis on permissible wave overtopping.

Approach

Wave overtopping events were measured at three coastal sites in Europe. These storm events were then simulated by laboratory tests and / or numerical modelling and were compared with the actual measured events. In addition, all existing data on overtopping was gathered into one database. The new full scale measurements and some more small scale testing were added to this to develop a generally applicable design method.

The CLASH software and methodology are available to all researchers, consultants and owners of coastal structures for:

  • the design and safety assessment of coastal structures
  • risk assessment of coastal areas
  • all projects for which the crest height of coastal structures has a determining role

This project ran from 2002 to 2005 at a cost of £139,840.
