Details

Background

A demountable flood defence system is a flood barrier that’s fully pre-installed and requires some form of operation during a flood event. It can also be one that’s partly installed and requires further installation before a flood. They can be an important part of flood risk management in areas where permanent barriers are too expensive or impractical. They can also be used temporarily while more permanent structures are being constructed.

Project results

This report describes a pilot project in which a demountable flood defence was operated in York during spring 2008. This was to protect 14 houses from flooding by the River Ouse.

The field trial provided evidence on what issues may be faced during the planning and installation of demountable flood defences in urban areas.

As a follow-up to this work, it was proposed that more detailed research should take place on a range of temporary and demountable flood barriers.

This project ran from 2004 to 2008.
