Details
Maps of many different sources of flooding are being developed by the Environment Agency and others in response to the 2007 floods, the Pitt Review and the EU Floods Directive. At the moment, these different sources of flood risk can only be looked at individually. This is the first phase of a project to explore how we can consider all sources of flooding together. This project enables the:
- combination of established risk data (such as flooding from rivers and the sea) with new data (such as surface water and reservoir inundation flood risk)
- the future inclusion of developing datasets (such as groundwater flood risk) This is undertaken in a probabilistic way that considers flooding from multiple sources.
Outcome
This two-phase project delivered a:
- methodology for developing a prototype tool for mapping flooding from all sources - a review of methods and datasets were carried out, plus a consultation with potential users to establish the requirements of the tool (phase 1)
- prototype tool (phase 2) for considering and mapping all sources of flood risk The prototype tool delivered in phase 2 was implemented in the MAST software and underwent pilot testing in four locations in:
- Lancashire
- Yorkshire
- Lincolnshire
- Dorset This pilot testing showed that the prototype MAST software has the potential to be an extremely useful tool.
This project ran from 2009 to 2011.
