Details

This research extended previous work that explored the national economic impacts of flooding and coastal erosion (FD1702). It aimed to measure the economic benefits of flood and coastal defences in relation to the budgets required to maintain and improve them.

This research added to the previous work by:

  • extending the area of the study into the Welsh Environment Agency region
  • refining the evaluation of damages caused to agriculture
  • examining the effects of flooding on road traffic
  • estimating the potential impacts of climate change on damages

This project aims to give policy makers and strategic planners information to:

  • guide policy
  • assess priority areas for protection
  • plan investment in the medium to long-term

The results of this research were used by Defra to support the spending review process. They also helped inform decisions about budgets for capital works and maintaining defences.

This project ran from 2000 to 2001 at a cost of £106,140.
