Details

This is the second phase of a project whose first phase examined potential technologies to use in a new multimedia flood warning system (FD2202 - ‘Improving dissemination of flood warnings’).

The second phase built on the work of the first phase by designing and demonstrating a prototype of the new system to the project board and team.

The technical report includes information on methods currently in use around the world for communicating all types of warnings, including:

  • flooding
  • chemical release
  • security alerts

Outcome

This project ended with a successful demonstration of the prototype using the technologies outlined in the above section. A further extension using the technology was planned for 2005 with a field trial in flood communities in North Yorkshire.

Further research into emerging technologies is also included for consideration for future use. Each method has been assessed and ranked against set criteria to decide if it’s suitable.

The project started in 2003 and was completed in 2004.
