Details

This study was prompted by the results of previous Defra / Agency research into problems with data management in flood and coastal risk management (‘Overview of Data Management Issues in Flood and Coastal Defence - W5G-007’). This project aimed to understand how data is currently used in managing flood and coastal risks, and find ways of improving it in order to develop a more strategic approach. The objective was to establish the current position, and identify where research is needed to plan an approach to managing data in the future.

Outcome

The project worked out where current problems could be fixed with quick changes or existing knowledge. It also identified new thinking on the topic to support:

  • policy development
  • day to day running of operations
  • existing data collection programmes

The project examined and made recommendations in five main areas of data management:

  • understanding data
  • roles and responsibilities of the people involved
  • the processes being followed
  • technologies that are or could be used
  • how data is audited

The project produced an R&D Technical Report (TR) and a Project Report (PR).

The TR is useful for Flood and Coastal Management (FCM) policy makers and data managers from outside government. It contains the results of the project and proposals for future research or actions that can be taken forward in the short to medium-term.

The PR is useful for data managers, engineers and scientists involved in FCM. It provides:

  • an overview and write up of outcomes of the workshop held on 24 April 2003
  • a list of relevant initiatives, projects, research reviewed within the study
  • the six draft Position Papers that helped to steer the production of the TR

The project started in 2003 and was completed in 2004 at a cost of £65,500.
