Details

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a European directive which aims to protect and improve the water environment. Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) activities can have a big impact, both positive and negative, on the water environment.

The WFD defines a list of mitigation measures, referred to as environmental improvements, which need to be carried out by set deadlines (2015 or 2027) to improve the water environment.

Outcomes

Healthy Catchments provides you a selection of case studies giving ideas of how to carry out environmental improvements when you undertake FCERM activities. It shows that implementing the WFD need not be complicated.

This work will also be of use to others involved in the management of:

  • rivers
  • drainage channels
  • estuaries
  • coasts

This work was started in October 2012 and completed in September 2013.
