Detail of outcome

We intend to sponsor the British Standards Institution to ensure that hydrogen-ready industrial-sized boiler equipment is covered by a Publicly Available Specification (PAS).

BEIS will also continue to assess the merits of requiring large boilers to be hydrogen-ready including through product regulation, environmental permitting, or a combination of the two. The findings of this work may form the basis for further consultation on proposals for changes to policy for industrial boiler equipment.

We received 37 responses to this call for evidence from a diverse range of groups, including:

  • original equipment manufacturers
  • trade associations
  • industrial sites
  • project developers
  • other supply chain participants
  • non-government organisations
  • energy suppliers
  • professional institutions
  • gas network operators
  • members of the public

Summary

We’re seeking views and evidence to inform the development of possible options to enable or require hydrogen-ready industrial boiler equipment.

Call for evidence description

Hydrogen-ready industrial boilers have the potential to help industry decarbonise and kick start the UK hydrogen economy. They can run on fossil fuels today but are designed for subsequent conversion to hydrogen, enabling industry to transition to a low carbon future.

The call for evidence covers these main areas:

  • how hydrogen-ready should be defined
  • whether hydrogen-ready boiler equipment would enable cheaper and faster fuel switching
  • whether government should take action to encourage hydrogen-ready boiler equipment.
  • the role of the supply chain and how best to maximise the economic opportunities for the UK

We want to hear from a broad range of groups, including but not limited to:

  • industrial sites
  • original equipment manufacturers for industrial boiler equipment
  • other participants in the supply chain for industrial boiler equipment
  • Energy Service Companies with an interest in hydrogen
  • gas suppliers, and other companies with an interest in hydrogen
  • non-governmental organisations, academics, and members of the public with an interest

Please do not send responses by post to the department at the moment as we may not be able to access them.
