£17.8 million to provide a resilient and reliable highway network in Cumbria (Levelling Up Fund 2)

Almost £18 million from the Levelling Up Fund has been allocated to upgrade 30km of the Cumbrian highway network.

Upgrading the Cumbrian highway network

The Cumbrian highway network serves communities along the Irish Sea coast and nationally significant employment sites. Levelling Up funding will see a comprehensive programme of improvement works on:

  • the A5086 between Cockermouth and Egremont
  • the A595 south of Sellafield
  • the A590 through Barrow-in-Furness

The improvements include:

  • resurfacing and drainage works
  • repairs to 21 bridge structures

Supporting communities and business

The investment will:

  • improve access to employment opportunities and services
  • reduce travel costs
  • reduce  road closures due to highway defects
