£20 million to repurpose key heritage sites in Stoke-on-Trent
Stoke-on-Trent was awarded £20 million from the Levelling Up Fund to repurpose several key heritage buildings.
The investment supports 3 projects:
- restoration and repurposing of the former Tunstall Library and Baths
- transformation of the former Spode Pottery Works
- repurposing of the Crown Works in Longton
Spode Works to become a community
Around £10 million will be used to redevelop the 6-acre Spode Works site which closed in 2008. The investment will enable the site to become a new vibrant residential community with several uses.
The scheme offers:
- creative commercial space preserving historical industrial architecture
- a range of new homes
Crown Works to become new entrance to Longton town centre
The former Crown Works factory in Longton will be repurposed with £6.5 million of funding. The scheme will enable regeneration of the vacant and derelict pottery works.
This will:
- create a modern gateway into Longton town centre
- provide new accommodation
Tunstall Library will become housing
The remaining £3.5 million will support the sympathetic redevelopment of the Grade II listed former Tunstall Library and Baths. The building will become high quality apartments and family homes.
Driving investment into town centres
Each scheme is located next to one of Stoke-on-Trent’s town centres.
This help will bring:

Council’s hope for Stoke-on-Trent
Councillor Abi Brown, Leader of the City Council explains:
The distinctive character of Stoke-on-Trent is a great source of local pride, and key to unlocking our future prosperity. We are passionate about protecting and celebrating our unique heritage. The city is leading the way with ambitious schemes to reinvigorate our town centres through the re-purposing of our historic places, recognising the confidence this brings to further investment within our local economy.
Levelling Up funding has kickstarted the redevelopment of these three remarkable historic sites, making them viable for further investment. Our vision is to create distinctive and quality places and spaces across Stoke-on-Trent where people want to live, work, visit and invest.
Each site, with its own identity, reflects the importance of the city and its industrial heritage. Restoration and re-invention of these historic buildings and places will provide a focal point for the community and a new lease of life as characterful homes, flexible work and creative spaces with a positive impact for the local area.
