£3.2 million Levelling Up Fund to develop the Greenways Network
Ards & North Down Borough Council was successful in their bid for £3.2 million to develop the Greenways Network in the borough.
The overall network proposed is a 52km long loop connecting the borough’s five major towns and the Greater Belfast Area.
This project will focus on two parts:
- creating a new greenway between Newtownards and Bangor
- extending an existing greenway between Comber and Newtownards
The Greenways
The funding will support:
- facilitating end-to-end green journeys which are not currently possible in the local area
- creation and extension of safe, accessible cycling networks
Greenway benefits
The investment is expected to:
- create safe new routes to education, retail, community links, parks and housing
- improve access to employment opportunities
- improve connectivity
The greenways will form an important part of the local council’s plans for achieving Net Zero and providing green forms of transport.
