The investment will support:

  • restoration of Stephenson Memorial Hall
  • regeneration of the town centre

Restoration of Stephenson Memorial Hall

The Grade II-listed hall was originally created to celebrate ‘father of the railways’ George Stephenson. Unfortunately, the building has fallen into disrepair.

Restoration works include:

  • extending the Pomegranate Theatre
  • refurbishment of Chesterfield Museum
  • new community facilities
  • new gallery space
  • a café and bar

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council:

Through this collaborative endeavour we can create a better, more prosperous future for our place and communities … initial work on site is due to begin in spring 2022.

Reinvigorating the town centre

The remaining funding will be used to create public spaces in the town centre.

Works will provide:

  • new seating for people to socialise
  • better digital connectivity
  • new landscaping
  • new lighting

Councillor Tricia Gilby:

We want Chesterfield town centre to be a place of opportunity for residents and businesses, and a valued destination for visitors. The projects that are being enabled through the Levelling Up Fund will go a long way to helping us achieve this ambition by enhancing our cultural offer and creating new experiences in and around the town’s most iconic building – the Crooked Spire – and our historic market.
