Driving a cold and power revolution

Innovate UK success story: Dearman technology firm drives a cold and power revolution

Technology business Dearman is trialling its revolutionary liquid nitrogen engine in Sainsbury’s refrigerated vehicles.

Dearman has secured more than £16 million in investment since it started five years ago, thanks in part to support from Innovate UK and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles.

The investment has helped it to develop its Dearman Engine for use in food transportation. The engine reduces harmful vehicle emissions but also delivers cold.

Technology could bring 1,000s of jobs to UK

Dearman expects the three-month trial will reduce carbon emissions by as much as 1.6 tonnes – equivalent to 10 trips from Land’s End to John O’Groats in a family car.

The SME now employs more than 70 people. It expects to see 100 Dearman refrigeration vehicles on the road in 2017 and to be in full production by 2018, potentially bringing thousands more jobs to the UK.
