Case study

Hereford City to receive £19.9 million transport investment (Levelling Up Fund 2)

Hereford has been provisionally allocated almost £20 million from the Levelling Up Fund for three transport projects.

Hereford Transport Hub

Levelling Up funding will support the creation of a new transport hub at Hereford Railway Station. The area in front of the Victorian Station will be redesigned as a new bus terminal and public forecourt. It will provide an easy to use and reliable link to all public transport including:

  • a cycle storage area and repair station
  • taxi and car parking areas
  • bus stands and layovers
  • welfare facilities

The hub will act as a new gateway to the city centre.

Active Travel

Funding will also support projects to promote active travel both North and South of the River Wye. North of the River Wye, a new cycle scheme will be implemented along the A465 linking to the Transport Hub, the City Centre and South of the river.

Funding will also be used to:

  • improve bus routes along Blueschool Street and Newmarket Street
  • improve the off-road walking and cycle path on Great Western Way
  • enhance the one-way cycle scheme on St Owens Street providing better access to the town centre

South of the River Wye, funding will be used to:

  • introduce new ‘Quiet Routes’ to the Hereford Enterprise Zone to encourage more people to cycle or walk in the area
  • improve the Holme Lacy Cycleway
