Inverness projects supported with almost £20 million levelling up investment
Three projects along the River Ness are being supported with almost £20 million from the Levelling Up Fund.
The projects will:
- boost the city’s sporting and cultural attractions
- support in achieving Net Zero goals
- preserve key heritage sites
- help attract more tourists
Inverness Castle
A castle has overlooked the River Ness since 1037. The current castle was constructed on the site of the original in 1836, as a courthouse and prison. Now, Inverness Castle is being transformed into a world class visitor attraction. This is part of the Inverness and Highland City Region Deal, to which the UK government has contributed.
The Levelling Up Fund award will support a new Castle Energy Centre in Castle Street.

Northern Meeting Park refurbishment
Funding will refurbish Northern Meeting Park, the home of the Highland Games since 1864.
Improvements will include:
- refurbishment and preservation of the Victorian grandstand
- improved access to green space
- a new pavilion
Upgrades to Bught Park
Bught Park’s grandstand will also be revived with:
- enhanced hospitality and events infrastructure
- modernised changing facilities
- enhanced spectator facilities
There are plans to install a new experience to celebrate shinty, the Highland’s traditional sport.
Drew Hendry, MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey said:
There is no doubt that these projects would improve these popular local landmarks providing enhanced sporting and recreational facilities. As part of developing the opportunities for the city this has highlighted the importance of engaging with agencies and communities to take forward our ambitions for the city.
Helping Inverness meet Net Zero goals
All projects are linked to the UK Net Zero agenda.
This includes providing:
- sustainable energy to Northern Meeting Park and Bught Park
- renewable energy systems at Inverness Castle
All new systems will provide energy support to nearby properties, driving environmental change.
