Levelling Up youth opportunities in Barnsley with £10 million support (Levelling Up Fund 2)
Over £10 million from the Levelling Up Fund has been awarded to Barnsley to improve opportunities for young people.
The funding will support key projects in Barnsley town centre.
Redevelopment of the Young People’s Wellbeing Hub
Funding will be used to redevelop the Young People’s Wellbeing Hub based at YMCA Barnsley and make upgrades to the YMCA building.
Improvements will:
- ensure that the buildings are fit for the future
- allow facilities to be used all year round
- create new facilities such as a new multi-use outdoor area
The redevelopment is a collaboration between Barnsley Council, YMCA Barnsley and local children’s charity, Chilypep.
Youth Activity Park
A brownfield site in the heart of the town will be regenerated into a youth activity park next to the forthcoming Barnsley Youth Zone.
The NAVE (Northern Academy of Vocal Excellence)
Levelling Up funding will transform a vacant heritage court building into a new facility offering outstanding musical experiences for young people from Barnsley and the wider North.
The new facility will provide:
- a home to the award-winning Barnsley Youth Choir
- musical training for hundreds of young people each week
- a high-quality specialist training centre for the North of England
Barnsley Civic theatre and creative arts centre
Barnsley Civic will also refurbish the derelict parts of the building to attract new audiences and interact with younger audiences.
