Lewisham revitalised with £19 million Levelling Up funding (Levelling Up Fund 2)

Over £19 million from the Levelling Up Fund will regenerate Lewisham town centre.

Levelling Up funding will support three projects that will provide new jobs, boost the local economy and create a better town centre for local people.  

Revitalising Lewisham Market  

The historic market will be transformed to support local traders and encourage new visitors.  

Improvements to the market include:  

  • changing the layout of the market to provide more pitch space for traders, make it more attractive for customers and with better waste facilities. 
  • new environmentally friendly canopies to extend the market outside current trading hours 
  • new paving, lighting and benches around the market to make it a more inviting and inclusive place to meet 

Levelling Up funding will also support the refurbishment of the iconic Grade II listed Clock Tower. 

A new culture and business hub at Lewisham Library 

Lewisham Library will be renovated into a new Culture and Business Hub that includes:  

  • more space for books and other library services 
  • Lewisham Lounge, a new community space for exhibitions, attractions and socialising 
  • workspace for local businesses and students  
  • a new rooftop bar and ground floor café 

A better-connected high street 

Lewisham High Street will become better connected, attractive and safer with:  

  • upgrades to current road crossings and the creation of new road crossings improving the area for pedestrians 
  • new trees and green space for people to enjoy 
  • improved entry routes for cyclists  
  • a new mobility hub for cyclists and electric vehicles 
  • better lighting and CCTV
