Over £200,000 helps people of Inverie take ownership of Old Forge pub

Investment from the Community Ownership Fund has helped the people of Inverie take full ownership of the pub in the village on Scotland’s Knoydart peninsula.

The Old Forge pub is in the village of Inverie on Scotland’s Knoydart peninsula. Its location is so remote that it is recognised as the most remote pub in the whole of mainland Britain. No roads reach the pub, and it is accessible only by boat or an 18-mile hike over mountains.

Community ownership

The pub is a beloved community asset, with a twenty-year history and has featured on numerous ‘best pubs’ lists over the years.  Former owners put it on the market in February 2021, putting the future of the pub at risk.

Now over £200,000 investment from the Community Ownership Fund has helped the people of Inverie take full ownership. This comes alongside community fundraising efforts and investment from the Scottish government.

Open for business

Now that it’s in community hands, the pub has already re-opened, with locals getting the keys in March 2022. The organisation that now owns the pub, The Old Forge Community Benefit Society, has ambitious plans to keep it at the heart of local life.

These plans include:

  • using a business model that takes direct action to tackle climate change

  • offering year-round employment, training and career development opportunities to staff
  • creating a friendly and inclusive social hub that is welcoming to all residents and visitors
