Over £56,000 funding to help secure the future of the Weardale High House Chapel
The High House Chapel is an iconic symbol in Weardale. Over £56,000 from the Community Ownership Fund will help secure its future.
Built in 1760, the building has been a part of Weardale life for over 260 years.
Future of the Chapel
The chapel was originally created as a meeting place for worshippers in the local parish. The last Sunday service was delivered in 2019, after almost 250 years of continuous use.
The Weardale Museum trust recently bought the chapel with the support of government funding. The investment will support key restoration works.
Plans for the chapel include:
- a new house for collections and exhibits
- a performance space
- visitor centre
Renovation works will ensure that the new ‘Weardale Museum and Heritage Centre’ will be of use for generations to come. The centre is planned to open in 2023.
