The Grade II listed Pugin Studios will be brought back to life with £300,000 support from the Community Ownership Fund. The Pugin Studios are part of the historic Granville Hotel in Ramsgate.
This new restoration project will see full renovations to the:
- restaurant
- ballroom
- bar
The restoration project is managed by Ramsgate community interest company Heritage Lab.
The rich history of the Granville
Originally built in 1867, The Granville hotel was originally a destination for Europe’s rich and famous in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The building has also been used as a:
- military base for the Canadian government in Word War 1
- a ballroom dance and jazz venue
Pugin Studios has not been seen by the public for over thirty years.
The future of Pugin Studios
This government funding will save the historic Pugin Studios from decay.
The renovated studios will include:
- space for exhibitions and conferences
- a new restaurant and bar
Once renovations are complete the former ballroom and theatre will be able to host events and weddings of up to 500 people.
Mike Galloway, Chairman of The Pugin Society said:
The grant will help to bring back to life a central part of what was the Granville Hotel, a celebrated and luxurious hotel and spa. The Granville was one of Edward Welby Pugin’s major secular designs and an unforgettable landmark on Ramsgate’s East Cliff. We greatly look forward to visiting the restored public rooms at the end of this ambitious project.
