St Helen’s receives £20 million to upgrade Earlestown town centre (Levelling Up Fund 2)

£20 million from the Levelling Up Fund will ensure the delivery of three transformative project in Earlestown.

Earlestown Market Square

The historic market square in St Helen’s will be transformed with new public spaces and a new market canopy.

The improved square will include:

  • a new market canopy
  • new seats
  • kiosks for small businesses
  • replaced paving and more trees

Earlestown Town Hall

Levelling Up funding will also help restore the derelict but iconic Grade II-listed Earlestown Town Hall, bringing it back into public use.

Earlestown Town Hall is a significant landmark in the town, a place which hosted one of the Beatles early performances.

The upgrades include:

  • new commercial workspace
  • a remodelled ground floor
  • community rooms for local people
  • a multifunctional hall
  • a new courtyard garden
  • a cafe extension

Earlestown Rail Station

Access improvements will be made to the Station and the 1830’s Railway building will be transformed into a café and heritage centre. Other improvements include:

  • better lighting to improve accessibility and safety
  • new signage, widened paths and new plants

Councillor David Baines, Leader of St Helens Borough Council, said:

We’re delighted to receive this funding in support of our plans for Earlestown and I would like to thank council officers and Conor McGinn for their support for this vital and transformational plan. The project will revitalise this historic market town, facilitate the reopening of Earlestown Town Hall and support transport improvements at Earlestown Rail Station, which has the world’s oldest rail junction and station building still in passenger service.
