Wolverhampton welcomes £20 million for new City Learning Quarter

£20 million from the Levelling Up Fund will help create a new City Learning Quarter in Wolverhampton. It will bring together people of all ages and backgrounds into a space to learn in the heart of the city centre.

A state-of-the-art campus

It will give people access to a high-quality learning space. The new campus will provide A-levels and higher education classes and will specialise in:

  • food technology and catering
  • health and social care
  • media and music
  • hair and beauty
  • arts and design
  • science

The modern learning space will respond to the needs of current and future employers.

Over the next 10 years the college will serve around:

  • 7,500 apprenticeships
  • 45,000 students

Mal Cowgill, Principal and Chief Executive of City of Wolverhampton College said:

The new city centre campus forms part of our ambitious plans to transform our student environment and cement ourselves as a leading education provider in the city.

Cowgill added that the campus will provide

a range of first-class facilities in key areas of employment - allowing people from Wolverhampton and beyond to gain the skills and knowledge required to succeed in their chosen career.

A central location for education

The campus will be located on the corner of Garrick Street and Bilston Street. It will bring together:

  • City of Wolverhampton College’s Metro One Campus
  • Central Library and Adult Education Service

Wider benefits to Wolverhampton

The City Learning Quarter project will boost the local area by:

  • generating and safeguarding 750 jobs
  • increasing footfall in the city centre

This investment follows other significant government funding in Wolverhampton. This includes:

  • over £15 million of investment from the Future High Streets Fund
  • the £25 million Town Deal

City of Wolverhampton Council Leader, Councillor Ian Brookfield said:

The City Learning Quarter will have a visible and tangible impact on the City of Wolverhampton, its residents and students at City of Wolverhampton College, making a massive difference to everyday life through direct investment in skills and education.
