Anaerobe reference unit (ARU): Cardiff

ARU is the reference laboratory for anaerobe identification of Bacteroides, Clostridia, Fusobacteria, Actinomyces spp.

The core services provided by the anaerobe reference unit (ARU) are:

  • anaerobe identification including Bacteroides, Clostridia, Fusobacteria, Actinomyces spp., and other closely related genera

  • susceptibility testing of clinically relevant anaerobes including confirmation of unusual resistance phenotypes

  • surveillance of antibiotic resistance in anaerobes

  • Clostridium difficile ribotyping (the C. difficile ribotyping reference laboratory is now in Leeds)
