Decommissioning Progress

Our work is as diverse as it is challenging. We pioneer the use of innovative techniques to accelerate decommissioning and clean-up.

We are responsible for decommissioning 12 Magnox nuclear sites and operating 1 hydro-electric plant spread across the UK.

Berkeley in Gloucestershire and Bradwell in Essex were the first two sites to begin electricity generation in 1962. Wylfa on Anglesey was the last site to be built and the last to stop generating in 2015.

In total, the Magnox sites produced more than 1,000 terawatt hours of electricity and generated for more than 300 years.

To effectively managing our decommissioning work we organise it into programmes, to deliver safe, efficient and consistent solutions for hazard reduction across all our sites.

These are:

  • Asset management

  • Waste management

  • Decommissioning

  • Defuelling
