Defra’s Official Development Assistance results estimates
Results of Defra’s Official Development Assistance programming including Defra International key performance indicators.
Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) Official Development Assistance (ODA) programming supports developing countries to:
-
reduce poverty
-
tackle climate change
-
halt and reverse global biodiversity loss
Defra’s new annual ODA results publication reports on what has been achieved through relevant programmes against a set of new Defra international (DI) key performance indicators (KPIs), focusing on:
-
biodiversity
-
poverty reduction
The DI KPIs sit within a larger suite of indicators called the ODA results framework. This framework also contains 12 pre-existing climate-focused International Climate Finance (ICF) KPIs, which are reported annually within a separate cross government ICF results publication.
Defra ODA results publications
The initial results publication includes the estimated results achieved through Defra’s ODA from 2020 to 2023 against 3 of the 5 finalised DI KPIs:
- KPI 1a - area under restoration practices
- KPI 1b - area designated as protected or other effective conservation measure (OECM)
- KPI 7 - people benefitting from strengthened or new livelihoods
The publication also includes case studies to illustrate the broader range of results achieved through Defra ODA programmes. The content of future publications will be subject to data coverage but is expected to contain increased reporting against more of the DI indicators.
Methodology notes and reporting templates
Methodologies for the first 5 DI KPIs were published in January 2025 and can be found at the links below. We aim to finalise and publish methodologies for the remaining 3 DI KPIs in late 2025.
Statement of voluntary compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics
DI results estimates are not official or national statistics. This is because of the range of data sources we use and their variable quality, which are affected by the challenging environments where we work.
We and our partners strive to apply best practice in data quality, and we voluntarily follow the Code of Practice for Statistics when producing DI results.
Our statement of voluntary compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics demonstrates the steps we have taken to maximise the trustworthiness, quality and value of DI results.
