Implementing geological disposal
As the developer of a geological disposal facility, we are undertaking preparatory work in advance of a site being selected.
The approach to making geological disposal happen is set out in in the Implementing Geological Disposal white paper.
Preparatory work
The process for developing a geological disposal facility involves assessing its performance and demonstrating its compliance with all relevant safety requirements. The requirements cover construction of the facility, all its operations and the long term safety after the facility has been closed and sealed.

What other countries are doing
Other countries with advanced nuclear programmes, including Canada, Finland, France, Sweden Switzerland, Japan and the United States, have all opted for geological disposal.
Some countries are further ahead in their plans. You can find out more about their work on their waste management organisations’ websites.
