An independent review of the physician associate and anaesthesia associate professions was commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in November 2024.

Background

The review was led by Professor Gillian Leng CBE. It considered the safety of the roles and their contribution to multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

The conclusions of the Leng review will inform the workforce plan to deliver the 10 Year Health Plan.

Engagement webinar recordings

As part of its commitment to an open and transparent approach to the review, the Leng review hosted a series of engagement webinars.

Each session included an update on the review’s progress from Professor Leng and a question and answer session to enable attendees to ask any questions and log any comments that may be relevant to the scope of the Leng review. The recordings were made at the end of March and the beginning of April 2025 and reflect the progress of the review at the time.

The Leng review: final report

The conclusions of the review and its 18 recommendations were published in July 2025.

Survey of healthcare professionals

The summary of responses to the surveys targeted at physician associates, anaesthesia associates and those that work with them was published in July 2025 alongside the final report of the Leng review.
