Lasting power of attorney: getting started as an attorney

What to do first if you're acting for someone under a lasting power of attorney.

These leaflets are brief guides to what’s involved in being an attorney under a lasting power of attorney (LPA).

If someone’s appointed you in their LPA for health and welfare or for property and financial affairs, find out what you can do now, including:

  • learning more about the person you’re acting for
  • helping them to make decisions
  • understanding your legal responsibilities
  • dealing with other people and organisations on behalf of someone else

You can also look at the Mental Capacity Act Code of Practice, which explains in detail what you can and can’t do as an attorney.

This page is available in Welsh (Cymraeg).
