Low carbon fuels in transport

How using low carbon fuels can reduce transport greenhouse gas emissions.

Low carbon fuels (LCFs) are a diverse range of fuels that reduce greenhouse gas emissions across their lifecycle when compared to conventional fossil fuels.

These fuels are an important part of the UK’s transport decarbonisation strategy, particularly in sectors where alternatives like electrification are not yet viable; such as aviation, shipping, and heavy-duty road transport.

Low carbon fuels support schemes

LCFs are supported primarily through 2 government schemes, the:

  • Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO)
  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate

The RTFO and SAF Mandate require fuel suppliers to ensure that a certain amount of the fuel they supply are low carbon fuels that meet eligibility criteria set out by those schemes.
