This statistical bulletin has been developed in response to the House of Commons Defence Committee (HCDC) inquiry into mefloquine prescribing in the UK armed forces. It presents a summary of mefloquine prescribing following the introduction of a new policy in September 2016.

The November 2023 publication of this statistic (covering data as at 1 October 2023) will present updated information on mefloquine prescriptions only. The publication will no longer provide an update of the total number of antimalarials prescribed.

This change allows us to put the focus on mefloquine prescribing; allowing us to remain accountable and transparent to public stakeholders, and maintain our commitment to the HCDC, while reducing processing time to ensure the best value for the time spent.
