On 7 May 2018, Comcast Corporation formally notified the European Commission of its intention to acquire the entire issued share capital of Sky plc.

On 21 May, the Secretary of State announced that he was minded not to use powers under section 58 of the Enterprise Act 2002 to intervene in certain media mergers on public interest grounds with regards to the merger.

On 5 June, the Secretary of State confirmed that he will not issue an intervention notice with regards to the proposed merger.
