The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Local Government and Building Safety, Lee Rowley MP, announced in a written ministerial statement on 16 March 2023 that the Secretary of State is ‘minded to’ intervene in the London Borough of Croydon. The council and other interested parties were invited to make representations on the proposed intervention package by 30 March.

Following consideration of these representations, on 20 July 2023, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, announced in a written ministerial statement that he was intervening in the London Borough of Croydon by issuing Directions to strengthen the remit of the London Borough of Croydon Improvement and Assurance Panel and moving it to a statutory footing. He would also be appointing Brian Roberts OBE and Pamela Leonce to the Panel to respectively lead on the individual priority areas of finance and housing.

On 24 January 2024 the department published the latest report from the Improvement and Assurance Panel on progress at the London Borough of Croydon alongside the ministerial response to Tony McArdle OBE. There is no change to the status of the intervention, but ministers will keep the existing arrangements under review.
