UK points-based immigration system: employers and EU citizens

Information to prepare employers and EU, EEA and Swiss citizens for the implementation of the UK’s points-based immigration system.

On 31 December 2020 free movement between the UK and the European Union (EU) will end and from 1 January 2021, the UK’s points-based immigration system will come into effect.

UK employers and EU citizens will need to adapt to the changes. From January 2021:

  • UK employers will need to be a registered sponsor if they want to recruit anyone from outside the UK
  • EU, EEA and Swiss citizens planning to live, work or study in the UK will need to apply through the points-based immigration system

This page provides information to help you prepare for the new system.
