This report is a summary of responses received and the government’s response to the consultation.

We have updated:

• the existing GCE AS and A level modern foreign languages subject content for Chinese
• the GCE AS and A level languages with smaller cohorts subject content for Japanese

These changes are for teaching from September 2024.

Ofqual also ran its own consultation on assessment arrangements.

Summary

We’re seeking your views on changes to the current subject content of Chinese and Japanese AS and A levels to allow the use of English where it is reasonable.

Consultation description

We’re proposing small changes to the AS and A level subject content, which will apply only to Chinese and Japanese, as exceptions to the modern foreign language subject content and subject content for smaller cohort languages.

We’re seeking your views on the proposed changes to provide a suitable post-16 qualification that is accessible for all students and the impact they may have.

Ofqual is also running a consultation on the assessment requirements for AS and A level qualifications in Chinese and Japanese.
