Detail of outcome

DVLA will now proceed with the implementation of the changes in Great Britain and amendments to legislation will come into force in by the end of the year.

Northern Ireland, DOE will be changing their legislation separately.

Summary

As a result of new EU definitions and standards to be implemented by December 2014, DVLA must change the law to remove some exemptions to the rules that cover driving licences.

This consultation ran from
9am on 23 September 2014 to 5pm on 21 October 2014

Consultation description

The aims of the proposal are to:

• fully harmonise the driving licence with those issued by other Member States
• improve road safety
• help ensure that UK drivers can continue to drive in other Member States without issue as our licences are recognised across the EU
